Black holes have unmatched aura.
In 1979, French astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet created the world’s first simulated image of a black hole using an IBM 7040 mainframe fed with punch cards. Luminet calculated the mathematical trajectories of light rays, then painstakingly plotted thousands of individual ink dots onto white paper by hand.
Today, supercomputers simulate the exact physics of the event horizon in 4K, ray-tracing how extreme gravity bends light around the shadow of a singularity.
