A dying detective walks into a psychiatric ward with a photograph of a missing boy, shows it to the patient he has been questioning for thirty-three years, and finally understands who he has been talking to. Dark (2017), Season 2, Episode 3, Ghosts (2019), is the hour where Netflix’s German time-travel masterpiece stops being a puzzle and becomes a tragedy about people running out of time in every direction at once.

The mood is grief spread across three decades and one family. In 1987, Christian Pätzold’s Egon Tiedemann, riddled with cancer and retired from the case that haunted him, returns to Ulrich Nielsen, the white-haired man who was arrested in 1953 for a crime that had not happened yet, and pieces it together through a Kreator song quoted before it was released and a police file naming a boy’s father, and when he hands over the picture of Mikkel, Ulrich’s thirty years of caged silence detonates into fury at the man who never knew he was hiding his son. Meanwhile Julika Jenkins’s adult Claudia opens a suitcase containing a time machine, discovers from H.G. Tannhaus that his book was inspired by a copy delivered from the future, the bootstrap paradox laid out plainly for the first time, and takes her first trip forward to find her daughter Regina sick in 2020, exactly as her older self warned. The oldest Claudia, knowing these are her last days, apologizes in 1954 to a young father who has no idea she is his child, and the episode closes in the forest with Noah, a gun, and a set of missing pages he refuses to hand to Adam. This is science fiction storytelling as family elegy, every paradox a person who could not say goodbye in time.

What makes it a must-see is the title. Nobody in this episode is dead yet, and every one of them is already haunting somebody.
